CPM and EPM are 2 names for the same software. The products did not change when the name did, and some still carry the older name.
Corporate performance management (CPM) is the name analysts gave to software that consolidates, plans and reports across a group. The vendors later renamed the category enterprise performance management (EPM). Proposals in 2026 still use both names for the same products.
Most groups ran the annual budget and the forecast in a planning application, kept apart from the consolidation.
The finance team shares out cost and revenue across products, customers and regions, using rules it owns.
Strategy maps and balanced scorecards for the board fell away when the category got its new name.
Every multi-entity group buys this first, for translation, eliminations and ownership across its entities.
The accounts, the notes and the board pack all tie back to the consolidated result the auditor tests.
Corporate performance management started as the analysts' name for the category. The term covered the methods, measures, processes and systems a company uses to run its own performance.
The first CPM suites bundled budgeting, planning and forecasting with profitability modelling and scorecards. Financial consolidation and statutory reporting made up the rest.
EPM became the usual name once the products moved to the cloud. Oracle had used the name EPM for Hyperion since it bought Hyperion in 2007.
| CPM, the suite | EPM, the platform | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the word comes from | The analysts' name for the category, defined in industry glossaries. | The industry's name for the same category, used by Oracle since 2007. |
| What it bundles | Budgeting and forecasting, consolidation, reporting, profitability and scorecards. | The close, consolidation, planning, reporting and analysis, on 1 model. |
| The scorecards | Strategy maps and balanced scorecards were a listed component. | Most vendors dropped them, and the board pack took their place. |
| Where the model lived | In separate applications, 1 for consolidation and 1 for planning, with metadata copied between them. | In 1 model on platforms built that way, and in copies on the others. |
| Where you see it today | Industry glossaries, older tender templates and OneStream's CPM Express. | Every current product page in the category, and the job titles in group finance. |
| The buyer's test | Ask which module changes when the proposal changes the word. | Ask the same question and you get the same answer, because the products are the same. |
CPM applications were meant to turn strategy into operational plans and send the results back up. Strategy sat at the top of the stack and the ledgers sat at the bottom.
The scorecard and strategy modules fell away over time. The consolidation and the budget carried on into EPM.
A group that bought a scorecard module in an old tender can check when anyone last opened it.
OneStream sells CPM Express to mid-market groups. The package is the OneStream platform with the model built in advance.
Wolters Kluwer has a corporate performance management entry in its CCH Tagetik glossary. Mid-market vendors such as Prophix also sell under the CPM label.
The name on the box makes no difference to the data model underneath. We survey that model in the same way under either name.
Groups choosing CPM software look at how many entities consolidate and how many ledgers feed them. They also look at whether the plan shares 1 model with the close.
For the statutory close, the shortlist is OneStream, Oracle EPM Cloud, SAP group reporting, CCH Tagetik and Board. For the plan on its own, Abacum (FP&A software) and the other FP&A platforms come in.
A tender can run to 400 requirement lines. The 3 lines about the entity list and the mapping set whether the project finishes on time.
In a group of 12 entities on 3 ERPs, CPM software holds 1 entity list, 1 chart of accounts and 1 calendar for every ERP. The work is mapping each ERP to those lists, and the category name never comes up in it.
Constancia is an EPM consultancy, and we have done that mapping on 58 implementations over 35 years. We price the work after the survey.
A CPM tender and an EPM tender get the same survey from us. The price is fixed once the survey is done.
EPM has 5 processes and a different job from an ERP, and the article explains how an implementation runs.
